Edge banding peeling off is a common problem in furniture making and woodworking, especially on cabinets, desks, shelves, and other panel-based products. It usually happens when the adhesive bond between the edge banding and the board is weakened by heat, moisture, poor preparation, or improper application. Understanding the possible causes can help you prevent the issue and improve the durability of the finished product. One major reason edge banding peels off is insufficient heat during application. If hot-melt adhesive is used, the glue must reach the correct temperature in order to activate properly. When the temperature is too low, the glue may not melt fully and will not create a strong bond. On the other hand, if the temperature is too high, the adhesive can become damaged or applied too quickly, which may also reduce bonding strength. Proper temperature control is essential for a secure result.Another common cause is poor surface preparation. The edge of the board should be clean, dry, and free from dust, oil, or sawdust before banding is applied. Even a thin layer of contamination can stop the adhesive from sticking well. If the board edge is rough, uneven, or chipped, the edge banding may not make full contact with the surface, creating weak points that later lift or peel.Moisture is also a serious factor. If the board absorbs water from the environment or from an improper cleaning process, the adhesive bond can weaken over time. This is especially true in kitchens, bathrooms, or other humid spaces. Changes in temperature and humidity can cause the board and banding material to expand and contract differently, putting stress on the glue line and causing the banding to separate. The quality of the edge banding material itself can matter as well. Low-quality banding may have poor adhesive compatibility, weak backing, or inconsistent thickness. If the material is too stiff or too thin, it may not conform well to the edge of the board. In some cases, the adhesive layer on pre-glued banding may be old, expired, or improperly stored, which reduces performance.Application pressure is another important factor. After the banding is placed on the edge, enough pressure must be applied to ensure full contact between the glue and the surface. If the pressure is too light, air pockets or gaps can remain under the banding. These weak areas may peel away later, especially at corners and ends.Cutting and trimming can also affect the final result. If the edge banding is not trimmed correctly, sharp corners or exposed edges may catch on objects and begin lifting. Repeated use and impact over time can make the peeling worse. To reduce peeling, always use proper heat, clean surfaces thoroughly, control moisture, apply firm pressure, and choose good-quality materials. Careful installation and maintenance will greatly improve the life of your edge banding.
